Learning to play the piano is hard. Your fingers need to find the right keys, apply the right pressure, and move in precise sequences – all while your brain tries to translate sheet music into muscle memory. What if your hands could learn faster with a teacher that literally guides them through each movement? That’s […]
Modern virtual reality headsets provide really great visuals and audio, but many experiences can’t be conveyed through those alone. There have been many attempts to expand on that to create more immersive experiences — we’ve even seen hardware to provide scent and thermal feedback. However, we’ve yet to see anything that can replicate eating food […]
One reason that fans prefer mechanical keyboards over membrane alternatives is that mechanical key switches provide a very noticeable tactile sensation at the moment a key press registers. Whether consciously or not, users notice that and stop pressing the key all the way through the maximum travel — reducing strain and RSI potential. Developed by […]
If the COVID pandemic showed us anything, it is that our public spaces are overflowing with opportunity for germ transmission. In 2019, most people didn’t think twice about touching a gas pump handle or an ATM touchscreen, but it quickly became apparent that such contact presents a genuine risk. We have technology to detect interaction […]
Most people today rely on technology to navigate through the world. That is practical thanks to the reliability of modern GPS. But receiving directions can be difficult for people with certain disabilities. People who are blind, for instance, cannot look at a map on a smartphone. People with missing limbs may not even be able […]
Virtual reality technology is advancing quickly and today’s headsets provide a very immersive visual and auditory experience. But they neglect the other senses. Haptic feedback, via vibration motors in controllers, is the only common technique for imparting a sense of touch. While haptic vests and other experimental devices exist, consumers continue to show that they […]
When trying to imagine a new way of interacting with either a video game or even another person remotely, being able to feel both temperature and touch sensations isn’t what most people would have in mind. However, thanks to some very interesting research being done by University of California, Santa Barbara student Bowen Zhang and […]
For the hearing impaired, communicating with others can be a real challenge, and this is especially problematic when it is a deaf parent trying to understand what their child needs, as the child is too young to learn sign language. Mithun Das was able to come up with a novel solution that combines a mobile app, […]
