This year’s SonarMática -the area at the Sonar Music Festival in Barcelona dedicated to interactive arts- there are three pieces including Arduino technology inside (either software, hardware or both), people at Hangar.org reported today during a chat conversation. The three pieces have been developed partly or totally at Hangar’s lab. Let’s take a quick look at them:

Surveillance Cameras: they are alive!!!

This project by the Spanish artist Ricardo Iglesias, is the result of a one and a half years long research process where he developed a series of robots with the ability of not just filming people with their embedded cameras, but to intelligently follow them increasing the creepyness level of the whole thing. The robot’s controller was prototyped with an Arduino board and took a long time to make the final design because it needs three switching power sources to feed the different parts of the design from a single battery (as Miguel, Hangar’s engineer reported).

Violí MIDI y Metal·lòfon MIDI

Joan Vallvé presents two different musical instruments he made using Arduino:

The “Violí MIDI” and “Metal·lòfon MIDI” are part of the project to design and construct an automated musical environment. This environment must be able to play live, and that is why it has been designed to be easy to handle, reliable, stable and completely portable. The roots of the project lie in a reflection on the use of robotics as a tool for musical composition and performance. The media and surroundings influence and determine the artist’s creative process. A new environment, a new language and a new interface will produce new creations and new musical styles. This is therefore a new format which calls into question the limits of the concepts of singer-songwriter or musical group.

E-SHOE

The “E-shoe” by Chicks on Speed is the world’s first wireless, high heeled shoe guitar, made in collaboration with Siberian born shoe-designer Max Kibardin and Alex Posada/Bartosz Zygmunt [from Hangar]. The e-shoe is capable of triggering sounds wirelessly using midi. This shoe is part of Chicks on Speed´s ever growing collection of self made “Objekt Instruments” including cigar box synthesizers, super suits’ with sewn-in body sensors that trigger audio/video samples, a Theremin tapestry and two hats made in collaboration with Christophe Coppins and Diego Del Lion & Jano, based on illuminated drawings of Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th-century Christian mystic who received visions, composed ethereal airs, performed healing and even founded convents.

En SonarMática de este año -el área del Festival Sonar de Barcelona dedicada al arte interactivo- hay tres piezas que incluyen tecnología Arduino (bien hardware, bien software, o ambos), según reportan desde Hangar.org durante un chat en el día de hoy. Este proyecto, por el artista español Ricardo Iglesias es el resultado de un año y medio de investigación y desarrollo en el que se han creado una serie de robots con la abilidad de no sólo filmar a la audiencia con sus cámaras, sino de seguirla de forma inteligente. El controlador de los robots se prototipó con un Arduino y tomó largo tiempo terminar el diseño final por la necesidad de crear una triple fuente de alimentación conmutada que alimentase las diferentes partes del proyecto desde una única batería (comenta Miguel, el ingeniero de Hangar).

Violí MIDI y Metal·lòfon MIDI

Joan Vallvé presenta dos intrumentos musicales hechos con Arduino:

El “Violín MIDI” y el “Metalófono MIDI” surgen como parte del proyecto de diseño y construcción de un entorno musical automático. Este entorno debe permitir tocar en directo y por esto se ha diseñado manejable, fiable, estable y totalmente portátil. El proyecto tiene su origen en la reflexión del uso de la robótica como herramienta para la creación y la actuación musical. Los medios y el entorno influyen y condicionan el proceso de creación del artista. Un nuevo entorno, un nuevo lenguaje y una nueva interfaz producirán nuevas creaciones, nuevos estilos musicales. Hablamos pues de un nuevo formato que cuestiona los límites de los conceptos cantautor o banda musical.

El “E-shoe” es capaz de disparar sonidos de forma inalámbrica mediante MIDI. Este zapato forma parte de una creciente colección llamada “Objekt Instruments”, que incluye sintetizadores hechos con cajas de puros, super-trajes con sensores corporales cosidos que disparan fragmentos de audio o vídeo, un tapiz-theremin y dos sombreros hechos en colaboración con Christophe Coppins y Diego Del Lion & Jano, basados en los dibujos iluminados de Hildegarda de Bingen, una mística cristiana del siglo XII que tenía visiones, componía música, curaba a la gente e incluso fundó conventos.
