Wearable Fabric on the Arduino Store

We are happy to announce the first wearable kit on the Arduino Store . This kit has been made by Plug’n’Wear specifically for us. All fabrics in this kit are produced in Italy, and strongly related to a textile family business. If you want to get deeper into the story of this product have a look at Riccardo Marchesi presentation (still in Italian, soon to be traslated!) at World Wide Rome 2012.

Hacking Christmas Lights

We are all waiting for consumer electronics producers to sell hacking-friendly, repairable products.

While we wait we can all enjoy [Darco] Christmas Lights Hack. He reverse engineered the leds protocol and the remote control of the GE Color Effects G-35.

The protocol on the data line is simple and self-clocked. Here are the low-level details:

  • Idle bus state: Low
  • Start Bit: High for 10µSeconds
  • 0 Bit: Low for 10µSeconds, High for 20µSeconds
  • 1 Bit: Low for 20µSeconds, High for 10µSeconds
  • Minimum quiet-time between frames: 30µSeconds

Each frame is 26 bits long and has the following format:

  • Start bit
  • 6-Bit Bulb Address, MSB first
  • 8-Bit Brightness, MSB first
  • 4-Bit Blue, MSB first
  • 4-Bit Green, MSB first
  • 4-Bit Red, MSB first

From this we can see that we have a color depth of 12 bits. Not terribly great, but this should still be plenty for our purposes. What is interesting is the Brightness field. This field acts a bit like a multiplier and enables smooth fade-ins and fade-outs.

Here is a compilation video I threw together showing my LED suit in action this past weekend at Dragon*Con 2010 in Atlanta. More build reports, photos, and video to come soon.

Some time ago I posted previous experiment in wearable leds cloth. In this case is more of a structure underneath a peculiar cloth. It’s controlled by iPhone with an app wrote from [uiproductions]. In this video everything is explained in a detailed way.

A must-see video produces by SparkFun about a very interesting installation by Jen Lewin, The Pool:

The Pool is an environment of giant, concentric circles created from interactive, wireless circular pads. By entering the pool, you enter a world where play and collaborative movement can create a cascading effect of swirling light and color .

Each pad in The Pool is its own wireless controller. All of the 106 pads communicate and listen to each other in an organic network formed in the same way people interact. The Pool has no single master computer and does not use a router to route or control connections. Each pad is independent, and simultaneously interacts and listens to its environment based on user feedback. Together, the 106 pads create complex, surprising, and unpredictable color arrays with their user participants.
