leOS and looper: task scheduling made easy on Arduino

In his website, Leonardo Miliani proposes a simple prototype of a pseudo operating system for Arduino, dubbed leOS (which is the acronym of little embedded operating system). Its goal is to provide the user with the capability to periodically schedule any given C function according to a specific time period. From his blog:

To be honest, it should more correct to say that leOS is actually something that is halfway a simple prototype of an real-time operating system (RTOS) and a scheduler. [...]

leOS can run simple tasks that don’t require excessive CPU time but it can be useful in all of those situations where the user wants to let a task run itself out of the main loop.

Based on the experience pursued during the development of leOS, Leonardo also proposes another project, named looper, which resembles a simple task scheduler. Its goal is to provide a much lighter set of APIs for scheduling tasks on the microcontroller, if compared to leOS.

Connecting your Arduino to AIR using an AIR Native Extension

[...]  The AIR Native Extension (ANE) is a C based .DLL / .framework for the Windows/Mac platforms that allows AIR to essentially open a COM port.  I wrote it in a way that is supposed to emulate the functions of the flash.net.Socket library that is included in the AIR runtime.  I’ve posted the entire project, including the source code and final binaries on Google Code at http://code.google.com/p/as3-arduino-connector/

Accordion Playing Midi Under 100$

Amazing Accordion sending MIDI under 100$ (instead of 6,699.00$), as [Dmitry Yegorenkov] shares on Arduino Forum and published on GitHub.

I like to play accordion & have a dog. People say dogs are singing with squeezeboxes and some people find it funny. Not for me. I know that my pet hears note harmonics much better then me & suffers from high pitches very much. I could not really practice at home just because of humanennes. That sucks. I like to play accordion. Programmers see cycle here. Let’s get out.

It plays to headphones, produces MIDI output, etc. etc. It costs $6,699.00 on e-bay (buy now offer) on November 17, 2010. In the US I can buy Peugeot Partner for the same price. In Ukraine where i live both are 1/2 times more expensive. For that money i’ll get beautiful device to practice at home and no service centers available within 400Km radius. Weird.

Playing with apps on an Android phone is fun. Building your own apps, even more so. But what about using the phone to operate a moving, talking bot? Tim Heath and Ryan Hickman have done exactly that. [...]

They could have purchased the pricey $175 Oomlout kit, which includes wheels, motors and an Arduino-based brain. Hickman and Heath opted for making their own chassis. Here’s a full list of parts they used:

  • $16 Bare bones Arduino
  • $3 Micro servo
  • $0.25 Hex inverter (handled 3.3v to 5v conversion)
  • $4 HTC USB breakout board
  • $4 miscellaneous cardboard, strap ties, wires, rear wheel
  • $3 Mini breadboard

Pyxis OS, an operating system for Arduino

Thom wrote in to share his impressive open source operating system*, Pyxis OS. Based around the Arduino hardware platform, it adds some pretty impressive features, such as the ability to run programs from an SD card, read/write to a FAT filesystem, and easily display graphics and GUI elements on a color LCD. It looks like it could be lots of fun to play with, and if you want to peer under the hood, a great way to learn how to build complex systems on tiny microcontrollers.
